Larnród Éireann is to invest €8 million in infrastructure at Rosslare Europort in County Wexford, to cater for future growth and shipping business needs.
The majority of the investment into the upgrade of rail facilities, will replace the Linkspan on Rosslare Europort’s Berth 2, at a cost of €6.8m, and is due to be completed towards the end of 2008.
Larnród Éireann has said Rosslare Europort is the fastest growing roll-on roll-off (RoRo) port in the State, with a 14 per cent increase in freight volumes in 2006, and 10 per cent this year to date.
A feasibility study is to be conducted by consultant engineers into deepening Berth 2, to the depth of nine metres, which would enable the port to handle a new class of larger RoRo ships, developed in recent years, called 'Humbermax'.
