Lisburn City Council recently opened its new changing facility at Lagan Valley Island, which will meet the needs of many of its customers with a disability, a part of its continuous facility service improvements and in a bid to meet as many needs as possible of all its customers.

The Chairman of its Corporate Services Committee, Councillor Bill Gardiner-Watson and Alderman Jeffrey Donaldson, were delighted to welcome Mrs Vivien Jess and her daughter, Miss Ashley Jess, to the facility opening. Also present were Mrs Irene Orr, Lisburn Access Group and the Director of Corporate Services, Mr David Briggs, who oversaw the works required for the changing facility.

Commenting, Cllr Gardiner-Watson, said: "I understand this is one of the most modern and fully functional access facilities in a public building anywhere in the Province and I am delighted, as is Alderman Donaldson, that the Council committed resources to this important facility in order to improve the customer experience when visiting Lagan Valley Island."

The large changing room, situated on the ground floor of the building, is completely suitable for both children and adults with a disability, and equipment includes a lightweight, fully movable electric hoist, a height-moveable washbasin, changing table and toilet. There is plenty of space for wheelchair access and moving around the various facilities.

The Director of Corporate Services, Mr David Briggs, said: "The Council is grateful to Mrs Jess and her daughter, Ashley, for coming along to see the fully-accessible room first-hand. We appreciate and value customer comments on our service provision, and, with the support of Council, were able to upgrade our provision of changing facilities for customers with a disability."

The new facility means anyone can enjoy Lagan Valley Island.
