Clare County Council has signed a contract worth €700,000 with a County Cork engineering company to carry out improvement and upgrading works to the Local Authority’s existing sewerage treatment plant of Newmarket-on-Fergus.
The works, to be carried out by Response Engineering of Charleville, involves increasing the capacity of the existing treatment plant to reflect the recent expansion of the town, which is located in close proximity to Shannon, Ennis and Limerick.
Hugh McGrath, Senior Executive Engineer, Water Services, Clare County Council, explained that the commencement of works represented the latest in a series of infrastructure projects that have been undertaken on Fergus.
"Clare County Council has delivered significant infrastructure projects to the town and surrounding area in recent years. In 2003, we opened the €100 million Newmarket-on-Fergus Bypass taking over 25,000 vehicles a day from the town centre. In the spring of 2008, we will complete the €5 million water supply scheme upgrade and we have this week to put in place a contract to facilitate increased sewerage capacity, due for completion by mid-2008," stated Mr McGrath.
He concluded: "This latest contract is fully funded by the much-publicised Planning Development Contribution Scheme. It provides for an additional population equivalent of 1,500 persons and is an example of just how important a role the Scheme plays in the effective delivery of key services, in tandem with Capital projects."
