Cookstown Aggregates Ltd, Doons Road, Cookstown was fined £6,000 at Dungannon Magistrates' court for breaches of waste management legislation.
On 2 March 2006 Environment and Heritage Service officers followed a lorry carrying controlled waste to Cookstown Aggregates' site on Doons Road, where they observed an illegal deposit of controlled waste.
On 15 May 2006 EHS officers returned to the site and observed that considerably more material had come on site. Wastes including scrap metal, unlabelled drums, wood, nappies and green waste were observed. Landfill gases and leachate, a polluting liquid, were also noted.
On a further visit to the site on 30 June 2006, officers observed that more material had been deposited. By 29 September 2006, the waste was overgrown and further leachate production was noted.
Cookstown Aggregates Ltd was found guilty on three charges of keeping waste and was fined £1,000 on each charge. The company was found guilty of a further three charges of related permitting the disposal of controlled waste and was fined £1,000 on each (a total of £6,000), plus court costs.
