Tipperary County Council has signed a contract for the construction of a recycling centre at Old Dublin Road, Roscrea.
John Craddock Ltd, a civil engineering contractors firm from Naas in Co. Kildare, will build the 1 million euro Ciivic Amenity site. The facility has been designed to deal with a range of recyclable materials including the usual newspapers, magazines and glass, and will also accept old electrical goods.
Mayor Jim Casey welcomed the signing of the contract. He said: "The roll out of this Civic Amenity site will provide the people of Roscrea with a purpose built state of the art facility for all household recycleables and also for some hazardous waste materials. The facility will contribute to the Council's policy to promote and develop reuse and recycling at household and community level in accordance with the targets in the Regional Waste Management Plan and the EU Waste Hierarchy."
The surrounding population of Roscrea is estimated at 12,000 and the site has been developed to cater for the region in accordance with the Government's Replacement Waste Management Plan.
A range of infrastructure will be provided in the civic amenity site including public lighting, on-site sewage treatment system and reinforced concrete areas for receptacles.
