Irish Transport Minister Noel Dempsey will attend Dublin's Connolly station today as the first new trains from the €400 million Iarnród Éireann intercity rail fleet are introduced on the Dublin to Sligo route.
From January 21, the service will be expanded to include eight trains, running each way on weekdays, including an 'early bird' service at 5:45am.
The rest of the 183 new trains will be introduced on other routes next year.
