The head of Westminster Cathedral has urged people to donate money and contribute to the renovation of the church.
The renovation of the 113 central London church will cost around £3m and is expected to take two years when work begins after Easter.
Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor has urged Catholics and the wider general public to help, saying: "Westminster Cathedral has been a symbol of the Catholic presence at the heart of our nation for over a hundred years.
"It is a Grade 1 listed building that is recognised as one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture and Byzantine art in the world.
"However, time has taken its toll and we must now take urgent action to ensure the future of this living house of prayer.”
A structural survey was taken of the church last year and revealed that three of its four domes, along with supporting arches, are in urgent need of repairs. Further renovations will include the updating of the buildings electrical and mechanical systems.
