€135m Proposed Power Plant Has Probable Prospects

Prospective developers of a €135m power plant planned for Mayo are confident their plans will be met with approval.

Mountside properties, who are also 20% stake holders in the 400 MW Tynagh power plant, have put forward the plans in conjunction with Turkish based Gama Construction. Sources close to the company have revealed the new gas-fired station in Claremorris is likely to make it through the planning process.

The company has three power stations in the advanced planning stage, totalling more that €300m altogether. The other two are proposed for the outskirts of Cahir, Co Tipperary, and Kilkenny city.

The Commission for Energy Regulation recently fast tracked the development in Kilkenny and instructed Eirgrid with to issue a connection offer to Mountside, enabling the power firm to connect to the national grid.

However, the Claremorris site is attracting local consternation at the plans, At a public meeting in Claremorris last week, a number of locals expressed opposition to Mountside's plans, claiming the plant would be excessively high and intrusive on the landscape.
