Dáil Energy Minister Eamon Ryan has welcomed the decision of the Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to respond to his call to hold a series of open discussions on electricity transmission infrastructure over the coming weeks.
Chair of the Committee John Cregan, has informed the Minister of the Committee's agreement to hold three consecutive meetings, beginning on January 29, on issues surrounding the national grid. EirGrid, the independent operator of the national grid will make a presentation to the Committee on February 6.
Ryan said: "It is essential that we give a full public hearing to all of the issues surrounding our networks and grid. Earlier this month, I launched an All-Island Grid Study which showed the necessity of significantly upgrading our electricity systems in order to meet the electricity needs of all our citizens into the future."
Ryan stated the understanding of the need for such development is vital.
He added: "I am aware, however, of local concerns surrounding the nature of such development. While this is an operational matter for EirGrid itself, we all need accurate information on the type and effects of such development in the wider public domain.
"The Committee is an ideal forum for such debate. It allows technical information to be presented on the record in an open democratic forum. It will give an opportunity for public representatives from all parties to question Eirgrid and other internationally-renowned experts in a transparent manner."
EirGrid will be presenting an information paper on transmission lines to the Joint Oireachtas Committee. This will include costings relevant to undergrounding of the Meath-Cavan and Cavan-Tyrone Power lines. International experts will also be invited to the Committee.
