Donegal Holiday Home Tax To Be Debated

Donegal County Council are meeting today to discuss taxing holiday homes.

A motion has been tabled which could lead to a levy of €500 being introduced.

At present holiday homeowners mostly from the North, who spend weekends and much of the summer at a second home in Donegal do not contribute towards the local infrastructure, including roads and sewerage facilities.

Proposer Councillor Bernard McGuinness said: "Holiday homeowners have said to me they cannot believe they aren't paying any charges."

It is estimated there are approximately 800 holiday homes across County Donegal. Cash-strapped local authorities are set to raise €4m if the tax is introduced.
