Executive Committed To Building Better Future

A modern, efficient infrastructure is an essential requirement for economic and social development, NI Assembly MLAs Ian Paisley Jnr and Gerry Kelly told delegates in Dublin today.

The Junior Ministers were addressing the All Island Infrastructure Investment conference where they told an audience of business, financial and construction delegates of the progress being made towards building a better future for all.

"A few weeks ago we achieved another milestone towards building a better society in Northern Ireland with the Executive’s first Programme for Government, our 10 year Investment Strategy for Northern Ireland and our Budget," Ian Paisley Jnr said.

"Growing a dynamic, innovative economy is our number one priority. We firmly believe that sustainable economic growth and increased prosperity will provide the opportunities and means to enhance quality life, reduce poverty and disadvantage."

Gerry Kelly spoke of the Executive's aim to build a peaceful, fair and prosperous, saying over £500m is to be invested in regenerating disadvantaged communities, neighbourhoods, towns and cities by 2012.

The development of infrastructure is also a priority the Ministers, being described by Ian Paisley Jnr as "an essential requirement to economic and social development".

Mr Kelly concluded, reiterating the importance of sustainability: "This island has a rich and varied natural heritage for which we share a common concern to enhance and protect. So too is our built heritage, which is rich with a complex array of archaeological sites, monuments and buildings reflecting the diversity of our history.

"These are precious assets that enhance the well-being and quality of life for everyone."
