British electricity firm, International Power has entered into a joint partnership with Bord Gais to purchase three power stations from the ESB.
Reports have declared that both companies would operate the power stations and Bord Gais would sell the electricity produced to the public.
The stations at Tarbert, Co Kerry, Marina Stream Turbine, Co Cork and the Great Island power generators are all up for sale, all as part of the opening up of the electricity market in Ireland.
The move also marks the start of Bord Gais' attempts to enter the domestic electricity supply market and rival the ESB's near monopoly.
