Crackdown On Builders' Faulty Tunnel

Two state bodies have reportedly initiated proceedings against the builders of the Dublin Port Tunnel over repeated system failures -which they claim have led to frequent closures.

The National Roads Authority and Dublin City Council decided to take the legal action yesterday after a problem caused the tunnel to be closed for eight hours yesterday - resulting in severe traffic congestion across the North of the city.

The shutdown was caused by a malfunction of the tunnels electronic systems.

Dublin City Council was forced to temporarily lift its ban on heavy goods vehicles in the city centre.

The NRA and Dublin City Council are said to be seeking compensation to recover all costs associated with the malfunctions from Nishimatsu-Mowlem-Irishenco - the consortium that built the €750m tunnel.
