Building firm owners are set to demand a pay freeze for construction workers at the forthcoming national pay talks.
The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) has confirmed the industry demands and has added that it will be calling for a reduction in minimum wage for its members.
Currently, the CIF operates under a registered employment scheme, which sets minimum entry-level wages, and not under the national minimum wage scheme.
Only a month ago the Central Bank predicted that the construction sector could see the loss of up to 24,000 jobs as the current slowdown in construction activity is set to continue.
Tom Parlon, CIF's Director General said the demands were aimed at bringing the sector's costs back in line with the Irish and the wider EU economy.
He declined to confirm how much of a cut the CIF are seeking but it has been reported that the Federation is seeking a reduction from €14 to €10.
