Armagh City and District Council is on course to save thousands of litres of water each week thanks to a new well.
The well has been sunk at the Council's depot to provide water for street sweepers, flowers watering and water features, meaning the mains supply no longer has to be used for these jobs.
The Council hopes to do its bit for the environment by saving a fifty thousand litres of mains water per week.
Mayor, Councillor Charles Rollston, said: "Clean water is a scarce and valuable resource. Armagh City and District Council takes it's commitment to protecting the environment very seriously and we are trying to do as much as we can to ensure that our contribution to the environment is as positive as possible."
The Council's Operational Services department is responsible for a range of key services including waste management and recycling, parks and open spaces, play areas and street cleansing.
The well was sunk with no cost to ratepayers as the Council secured grant aid from the Landfill Tax Credit scheme.
David McKee, Head of Operational Services at the Council, said: "We are delighted to be able to reduce the amount of treated water we use and are closely monitoring our water use to ensure that it is not wasted. This is just one of a number of environmental initiatives we have introduced and as proud holders of the ISO14001 standard, we intend to continue making environmental improvements in all aspects of our activities."
