Problems with street parking around the construction site of the new Tesco Store at Springhill were eased this week when North Down Borough Council provided alternate parking for construction workers at Bangor Sportsplex.
Following a residents meeting which concerns were raised about disruption to residents' access to their properties, the main contractor on the build, Patton Group, approached the Council regarding the provision of alternate car parking for its 200 plus workers. The Council agreed that up to 150 spaces would be allocated for Patton Group workers at Bangor Sportsplex on the Old Belfast Road, which is convenient to the Springhill site. Patton Group is transporting workers to and from the car park using mini buses and has employed staff to patrol the perimeter of the site directing vehicles to car park spaces.
Commenting on the arrangement, Mayor of North Down, Councillor Dr Stephen Farry, said: "Council is pleased to be able to assist in this matter and help alleviate the traffic congestion around the Springhill construction site. While Patton Group has worked hard to limit disruption to residents during the course of the build, there is no doubt that the problems with street parking have increased over the past few weeks. With space for up to 150 vehicles at Bangor Sportsplex, we hope that this measure will make a real difference to residents in the area."
