Minister Visits Greater Shankill Community Council

Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA yesterday visited the Shankill area to meet with members of the Greater Shankill Community Council.

The Minister discussed a number of issues with community representatives including local housing conditions, waiting lists and a Housing Executive Research Project on the level of private renting.

The Minister said: "Housing and Regeneration are of crucial importance in this area of Belfast. I felt it was important for me to discuss the needs of local people and see the work that is being done to try to provide decent affordable homes and improve living conditions.

"I am very much aware of the housing situation in the Greater Shankill area. I am determined to deal with local issues in a manner that is sensitive to the needs of the community."

The Minister also took the opportunity to call in and meet with organisers and delegates at the start of the Greater Shankill Community Convention’s conference at the Spectrum Centre. The conference was arranged to hear about the policies and procedures which influence the provision and management of public and private housing in the Greater Shankill area.
