The go-ahead has been given to Fingal County Council to seek tenders for the final element of the Dublin Bay Sewerage Scheme Project, according to Local Fianna Fáil Senator Martin Brady.
The contract, estimated to cost €6 million, is the last of three contracts designed to collect sewage from the Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle areas for transfer to the Ringsend Waste Water Treatment Plant via the submarine pipeline across Dublin Bay.
Work is underway on the other two contracts. Altogether the three contracts are worth approximately €16.7 million.
"The upcoming work involves the construction of a sewage pipeline over a distance of 1.75 kilometres, including 1.2 kilometres of tunnelling," said Senator Brady.
"This Howth contract is being funded by the Environment Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2007 - 2009. Once completed, it will raise the environmental standards significantly as there will be no more discharges of untreated sewage off the Nose of Howth."
He urged Fingal County Council to look for tenders to ensure construction work begins as soon as possible.
