A €3 million boost has been announced for works at 13 locations from Stillorgan reservoir to Newtown Avenue as part of the Carysfort Maretimo Stream Improvement Scheme.
The funding has been allocated from the Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009 to facilitate the tender process.
Barry Andrews welcomed the announcement that Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Council are to proceed with the work. He said: "This improvement scheme is long overdue and vital to the local community. Sustained development and improper maintenance over the years has meant that the stream is unable to cope with the drainage demands on it.
"The pressures put on the stream have seen flooding occur all too frequently which has caused severe damage to private property," said Deputy Andrews
"I have been actively campaigning for a number of years to secure the funding needed for the scheme. I was delighted by the Government's announcement that €3 million had been allocated from the Water Services Investment Programme 2007-2009 to facilitate the tender process," he added.
The Carysfort Maretimo Stream Improvement Scheme will consist of the provision of the following stream improvement measures; modifications to existing stream structures; provision of additional culverts and manhole chambers; stream training and channel widening; culvert inlet improvement measures; stream bank protection measures; upgrading of existing trash screens and provision of new trash screens; provision of access to trash screens for maintenance purposes; provision of flood protection walls; removal of structures acting as flow obstructions; removal of scrub and vegetation acting as flow obstructions, provision of safety fencing/handrailing and service and utility diversions.
Plans and particulars of the proposals are available for inspection from Thursday March 20th 2008 to Thursday May 1st at the Economic Development and Planning Department in Dún Laoghaire County Hall.
Deputy Andrews urged all interested parties to familiarise themselves with the plans and called on the local authority to proceed to the construction stage with out any delay.
