Irish utility group NTR has entered into negotiations with a US energy company in a bid to enter the solar energy sector for the first time.
The Irish Independent has reported that NTR is holding talks with Arizona-headquartered Stirling Energy Systems, which has been working with a US government-sponsored research laboratory to refine the solar technology that it plans to use in a $2bn energy plant development.
It plans to develop two major energy plants in California - among the largest in the world - that could power one million Californian homes.
If an agreement is reached, NTR is expected to take a stake in the multi-million dollar firm. However, a spokesman for the utility company declined to comment on any US discussions but said that the company is "always in discussions with potential partners and that it's no secret that the company has been exploring the renewable energy sector in the US".
