Meath County Council has announced that it has been allocated a €2,760,500 funding package under the 2008 rural water programme.

The council intends to spend €1,440,000 to complete the Kilcloon and Kiltale Sewerage Schemes this year.

A further €300,000 will be spent on upgrading the Meath Hill Group Water Scheme - proposals submitted are currently being examined

€220,500 will be provided to commence works on a number of new Group Water and Sewerage Schemes. A number of Schemes are currently at the advanced design state however, the Mooretown/Realtogue, Navan Phase 1 Group Water Scheme has commenced and is expected to be completed in mid 2008.

Meath County Council has also allocated €800,000 towards Small Water and Sewerage Schemes.

It is understood that the Council will prioritise works that complement existing rural water measures such as the upgrading of small public schemes which in turn supply group schemes.

The Council has also said that the overall priority will continue to focus on addressing water quality problems and bring Schemes into compliance with the Water Quality Regulations.

It is also understood that the Council is currently preparing a programme of works for Small Water and Sewerage Schemes for completion in 2008.

Speaking about the Meath County funding Minister Wallace said: "This funding strongly supports the Government's strategy for upgrading rural water infrastructure in order to provide better quality services for rural communities throughout the county."
