Navan, Co Meath is to be recommended as the site for the new regional hospital for the northeast, it emerged today.
The Health Service Executive is to receive a report from the consultants appointed to carry out a study on the location of the hospital today.
It is believed that Navan has won out in the location battle, in a decision that is likely to anger many in Louth and Monaghan.
Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd has said he has been reliably informed of the decision, which he said has been made by "unelected, unaccountable, unnamed" bureaucrats.
He claimed that the hospital would be better located in Drogheda, which has better transport links and a bigger population.
The Health Service Executive said however, that it has yet to make a decision on the location of the hospital and has not yet received the report the consultants.
