Government To Review Affordable Housing Act

The Government is to review the section of the controversial Planning and Development Act that seeks to increase the supply of affordable housing.

The review announced today by Housing Minister Batt O'Keefe, coincides with the publication of a report from the Affordable Homes Partnership.

Under Part V of the Planning and Development Act, developers are required to release houses at cost to local authorities.

While the Affordable Homes Partnership has acknowledged supply of affordable homes is increasing, it wants to speed up the delivery of housing.

One of the recommendations it has suggested is the removal of the time limit on the claw-back measure. Currently, local authorities are entitled to a share of profit if an affordable home it supplied is sold within 10 years.

The Minister is to begin the review with an appeal for submissions from interested parties.
