Construction of the €18m University of Limerick medical school building is expected to begin in March next year.

Dublin based Grafton Architects are now drawing up plans for the scheme on the university's north campus in Co Clare.

Consultants White Young Green and quantity surveying firm Nolan Ryan have been awarded the key contract.

The new 4,000 square metre building will be located next to the Health Sciences building and the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance.

The medical school will consist of clinical skills practice labs, seminar rooms, lecture areas, cafeteria and offices.

Brian Hand, director of the buildings and estates department at the University of Limerick, said: "This medical school building will be an excellent addition to the university.

"It is a vital teaching facility which will enable medical students to gain relevant experience in a realistic setting and we very much look forward to working with WYG/NR on this project."

Plans will be submitted to Clare County Council within the coming months.
