One of Ireland's leading energy suppliers, Bord Gáis, is expected to apply to the Energy Regulator for permission to increase prices by over 15%, which could hit consumers' pockets by October.

Bord Gáis management are expected to announce annual results today, in conjunction with the firm's outline for wholesale gas costs, which are continuing to rise World-wide.

Ireland imports the majority of its gas reserves. The price of the natural resource normal follows any cost fluctuations in oil, which has seen steep global rises.

During the last year gas prices have doubled.

This week UK-based Centrica, the British Gas supplier, warned of a possible 30% increase in consumer prices throughout Britain.

Similar financial factors have prompted Bord Gáis to apply for a 15% rise this July, which could take effect as early as this October.

Increased gas billed will hit consumers at a time when they are already paying more for general food and fuel.
