Construction of Galway’s 2009 'Race Village' will only begin a few weeks before next year’s Volvo Ocean Race’s stopover in the city.
Due to pass through the city in May 2009, organisers say major construction work, associated with the event will not start any earlier than a month prior to the stopover.
The work includes the removal of oil tanks from the city’s docks to create space for the temporary village.
The race is expected to be Ireland's largest sporting event next year, with the event due to generate around €43 million for the local economy.
The construction of a three-acre tented village will encompass entertainment facilities, developed at the docks area. It is expected the project will be integrated with the city centre district.
Projected crowds of up to 140,000 people will enjoy the festivities and street parades during the race’s two-week stay in Galway.
The organiser of the event, 'Let’s do it Galway', said that although infrastructural works will commence in April next year, the temporary "bigger" structure will not be set up until May, just a number of weeks before the actual event kicks-off.
