Glenshane Road Resurfacing Commences Monday

Construction News Image
The A6 Glenshane Road, Londonderry, is to undergo a major £600,000 resurfacing project, which is due to commence next week.

The Altnagelvin Brae project, stretching from Millbrook Road to the Altnagelvin Hospital entrance, will begin on Monday 2 June and is expected to finish at the end of August.

The scheme will also include 700 metres of shared footway and cycletrack and upgrading of the traffic signals at the Hospital entrance and Belt Road at a cost of £60,000.

It is expected the most difficult sections of the work will be undertaken during July and August, when traffic levels should be lower because of school holidays. The Roads Service will also implement suitable diversions and restrict site work to off peak hours.

However, the department expects traffic delays and officials have advised journeys should be planned accordingly, using alternative routes where possible.

During initial stages of the scheme Belfast bound traffic will be diverted via the Old Drumahoe Road.

During other periods of the work the existing three-lane carriageway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction.

Road closures will take place at key stages in the works, with traffic being diverted via Crescent Link, Irish Street, Church Brae and Ardmore Road. Although, these diversions will only be in place overnight Saturday evening to 1pm on Sunday.

A temporary 40 mph speed limit will be in place on Altnagelvin Brae for the duration of the work.
