The Irish Health and Safety Authority has reissued a warning on the use of generators, stressing they should only be used outside.
The urgent warning was released amid fears that many construction workers are still unaware of the dangers associated with carbon monoxide poisoning, emitted by generators in unventilated areas.
The authority has also asked that employers impart this vital information to their employees, who are ignorant to the risks.
Basis guidelines insist generators are used outdoors, and never inside. The only exception to this is when special provisions have been made to transfer the exhaust gases, from the engine, into the open air.
Highly ventilated working areas are also exempt.
The Health and Safety Authority has produced an information sheet on the dangers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
This information sheet and all Health and Safety Authority publications are available for free download from the HSA website.
