West Belfast's Falls Road is to benefit from a six-month long intensive clean-up effort, as part of Belfast City Council's 'Renewing the Routes' regeneration programme.

The 'Renewing the Routes' programme is working in partnership with the council's cleansing team on this key arterial route, to deliver a pilot scheme of high-impact graffiti removal.

As part of the scheme, the main Falls Road frontage will be the subject of an intensive cleansing programme every day.

Councillor Michael Browne, Chairman of the Council's Development Committee, which is overseeing the programme, said: "Our arterial routes into the city were once thriving locations, supporting their surrounding neighbourhoods; but, they now require targeted support to tackle problems of economic, social, physical and environmental decline."

"The 'Renewing the Routes' initiative not only will tackle graffiti, but will provide much needed capital investment into our commercial sector," added Councillor Browne.

The programme will kick start a major investment proposed for the Falls Road, lower Springfield Road and Andersonstown, under the Integrated Development Funds.

The initiative is holistic and seeks to address the upgrading of the arterial routes through initiatives that can deliver sustainable regeneration.
