For those who need to know about the flows and water levels in Ireland's rivers and lakes, and for anyone with a general interest in such matters, an important improvement in the accessibility of such information has now been made by the Environmental Protection Agency - with the launch of a new web access facility.

The EPA HydroNet site provides access to summary hydrometric data, which for several decades has been collected by local authorities and is processed on an ongoing basis by the EPA.

This information can now be accessed at the EPA HydroNet site on the EPA home page at www.epa.ie.

"Protecting the aquatic environment from pollution, planning new water supplies and leisure facilities, and many other aspects of economic and daily life are critically dependant on the availability of such information," said Larry Stapleton, Director, EPA Office of Environmental Assessment.

A range of hydrometric data types is available, including water levels, flows and summary statistics.

The site contains information from over 200 locations on rivers and lakes around the Republic of Ireland, where local authorities have been collecting water level data from the 1970s.
