Anti-pylon protesters are expected to gather from across Monaghan, Cavan and Meath today, to vent opposition to planned underground, high-power electric cables.

The rally, organised by the North East Pylon Pressure group, is set to include hundreds of tractors, causing traffic disruption in the Meath area.

AA Roadwatch said drivers should expect some tailbacks on the N51 Drogheda/Delvin Road, N52 Dundalk/Mullingar Road and the N3 Dublin/Navan Road as the tractors cross the road.

The 'Tractor Run' will meet in a field to spell out a "No Plyons" message to Eirgrid.

The residents' ongoing campaign has been orchestrated across the northeast.

Last week, the group claimed an international report, published by Energy Minister Eamon Ryan, endorsed their opposition.

"The Ecofys Report on electricity transmission totally vindicates what we've been saying all along and blows major holes in EirGrid's arguments," said North East Pylon Campaign leader Aimee Treacy.

The report, commissioned by the minister last February, was expected to endorse EirGrid's argument of the technical infeasibility of put high-power electricity cables underground, over long distances.

But experts have now confirmed it is possible.

EirGrid has said it is studying the report and refused to comment until it completes its evaluation.
