The body representing Irish builders has blasted negative press reports, which it says are discouraging some young people from pursuing a career in construction.
The latest Central Applications Office (CAO) figures have pointed to a fall in interest for courses linked to the building trade.
More than 300 course areas have suffered from lower applications, but the most dramatic decline has been seen in the construction sector.
Entry requirements for architecture, engineering and construction management courses are all down, as a result of falling demand.
The Construction Industry Federation's (CIF) Tom Parlon said course preferences could be affected by the negative image of the sector, portrayed in the media.
However, Mr Parlon did recognise that others might be discouraged by the current state of the housing market.
Despite this, the CIF has insisted there are still plenty of job opportunities, regardless of the downturn.
