The Irish Planning Appeals board has rejected proposals to build a contentious hotel development in Tipperary.

The development, which received strong opposition from locals, was to be built on a Cashel site, formerly owned by the Presentation Sisters.

A local pressure group has insisted the nuns sold the land to Cashel Town Council, seven years ago, with the understanding it would be transformed into a public park.

The Council contested this suggestion, and the land was later sold to a developer for a profit of almost €1.5m.

Meanwhile, in other construction news, leading trade supplier Grafton has confirmed it will set up a warehouse facility in China.

The construction group has joined forces with supply chain company PCH.

The venture is reportedly aimed at streamlining product supply to markets in the UK and Ireland.

Grafton currently sources €48m of its products from China, which it plans to double over the next three years.
