€250k Roads Investment For Connemara

Roads in Connemara Gaeltacht are set to receive an additional quarter of a million euros of investment.

The extra funding was announced by Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Minister Éamon Ó Cuív.

Galway County Council will now undertake €252,100 worth of improvement through the Accommodation Roads Scheme 2008.

Sixteen roads in total will benefit from the extended scheme, which received its first installment of €138,350 in May.

Some of the major funds include €26,000 to a 475m segment of road in An gCoill Rua Thiar, €26,000 from the public road as far as the pier at Stan na nGarranta, Leitir Caladh, 600m, €21,500 to a 385m segment of road from the public road to a private house in Tír an Fhia, and €21,600 to a 425m segment of road from the public road as far as the houses at Camus Íochtair.

Meanwhile, the western Health and Safety Executive has lodged plans for a new internal ring road, at Galway's University Hospital, to the city council.

The existing road, which provides main access to the hospital, will be widened and upgraded as part of the proposals.

The works will take place at Newcastle Road and the Cancer Care Hostel, Inis Aoibhinn.

A new road will also be built between Inis Aoibhinn and the existing road beside the mortuary.

The total length of the additions will be 825m, with 6m to 6.5m wide carriageway and a 1.2m footpath.

The maternity hospital car park will be reconfigured as part of the plans.

Parking at the Community Services offices will also be replaced.

Access from Costelloe road will be restricted by the installation of retractable bollards in the existing gateway.

Drainage, fencing, lighting repairs will also take place.
