Construction worked has kicked-off on the site of Limerick's new Greyhound Stadium.
Filling and preparation for the new race track started last week.
The preparation work at the Greenpark site marks the beginning of the significant development, which is due to open its doors in 2010.
The next stage will be finalised this week, with the completion of the interviews for the selection of the Project Manager - to oversee the entire scheme.
Notices for tenders have also been issued for the main contractors and specialists for the development and should be in place over the next couple of months.
Tony McKenna, Chairman of Limerick Greyhound Stadium & IGB Board Director, said: "The commencement of this work demonstrates the commitment of the Irish Greyhound Board in bringing a state of the art facility to the greyhound owners and breeders of Limerick.
"It is long overdue and will be a benchmark for future developments in greyhound racing circles not only in Ireland but abroad.
"This is yet another example of the strong sporting tradition that Limerick has and the location will be ideal for visitors not only mid-west region but from all over Ireland," he added.
Last week an up-grade of Kildare's Newbridge Track was announced.
The face-lift of this stadium will be grant-aided by the Irish Greyhound Board.
