A major refurbishment scheme at Lurgan's public recycling centre has entered its second phase.

The £857,000 project, funded by Craigavon Borough Council, will increase the site's size by a third - with compactor skips holding much more waste.

Work at the back of the Newline Recycling Centre has been completed. The original site is now being handed over to the contractor for further development.

Users have been warned of a temporary entrance to the site, and a general rearrangement of both the skip and recycling bank facilities at the site.

Chairman of the Environmental Services Committee, Councillor Mairead O’Dowd, said: "The work on the site is scheduled for completion by Christmas.

"Staff will be there to help people but in order for the site to remain open throughout the refurbishment we need the publics’ co-operation and understanding. We would ask them to take more care when using New Line and would remind them that the site will be much better when refurbished."

At present Craigavon’s recycling rate stands at 37% - and according to officials - well on track to achieving the required 40% by 2010.
