No Irish jobs will go at plumbing and suppliers firm Wolseley, it has been reported.

Today, the firm announced 2,300 jobs cuts across 200 UK stores, after reporting a 45% fall in pre-tax profits.

However, a spokesman for the firm, which runs 100 supply stores in Ireland, has told Irishconstruction.com that today's announcement will have no impact on jobs in the Republic.

A spokesman told the website "no jobs whatsoever" will be cut in Ireland.

He said the 2,000 jobs cuts will apply specifically to UK operations.

Wolseley already axed 5,000 jobs during the first quarter of this year.

In a statement, the firm said further redundancies would help recoup £80m a year.

The latest round of job cuts will be phased over the next few months.

Wolseley Group Chief Executive Chip Hornsby said: "We continue to react swiftly to market conditions with aggressive but measured cost reduction.

"In these unprecedented circumstances, the key priorities remain driving cost reduction and enhancing cash flow to ensure the Group remains compliant with its banking covenants."
