Gary Shaw, Cultural Services Manager with Antrim Borough Council, said: "Contractors will begin on clearing the site this week and as work progresses it will lead to the major restoration of one of Antrim's most important landmarks and help to regenerate the heart of the town."
The project is expected to take around 15 months to complete and once finished will house Antrim Information Centre, which is transferring from its existing premises in High Street, and a new multi-purpose auditorium on the first floor providing space for a range of functions including theatre and music promotions.

"The relocation of some cultural activities from Clotworthy Arts Centre should provide a major boost to the evening economy in the town centre," said Mr Shaw.
"It is due to grant aid from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency Historic Building Grant that we are able to carry out this transformation."
He added: "As well as internal changes, extensive work is due to take place on the roof and cupola, which may lead to its temporary removal, however all works to the building will be sympathetic to the original character of the building."
