Coca-Cola's plans to build a new plant in Wexford will bring 500 much-needed construction jobs, the local council has heard,
Describing the building work as a "major shot in the arm" for the sector, Mayor Ted Howlin told council colleagues the global corporation’s interest Wexford in could sustain "badly needed" construction jobs in the area for 20 months.
Councillor George Lawlor said Coca-Cola’s $300m investment demonstrated a 'huge' vote of confidence in Wexford, adding the move would be a "significant development in the history of manufacturing" in the region.
The multi-national firm's extensive research and development work could be enough to attract other industries to the area, according to Councillor Joe Ryan.
Welcoming the drinks company, Councillor Paddy Nolan added: "I hope they keep the flavour the same and the jobs coming."
The Mayor suggested the $300m Wexford investment brought Coca-Cola's total outlay in Ireland to $1bn.
"And when we drink Coca Cola in future we will know that we are drinking a Wexford product, it’s definitely is the real thing," added Councillor Ryan.
