One of Ireland's most influential workers' unions has called for the greater protection of those facing home repossession.
SIPTU said a moratorium on mortgage payments should be made available for people who have lost their jobs.
Union officials have suggested people unable to make repayments should be offered a two-year moratorium to help them avoid losing their home.
After the government made it clear it would support the banking institutions, the SIPTU insisted the same pledge should be afforded to homeowners.
Meanwhile, SIPTU also said the State should recapitalise Irish-owned banks, increase the top rate of income tax to 42% and increase tax credits to offset the effects of the 1% income levy on low-paid workers.
