There is no risk to public health from the toxic waste found at the former Irish Steel plant in Cork, an assessment has concluded.
A report, released this morning, suggested the site poses no identifiable threat to local residents.
Despite readings of deadly toxins, including Chromium 6, at the Haulbowline site, reports today have confirmed that the levels are not dangerous to human health.
Consultants White Young Green were appointed by Environment Minister John Gormley to study any potential risks in the harbour area, after surprising levels of contamination were discovered earlier this year.
The consultants have recommended further investigations be carried out to establish why elevated levels of mercury, arsenic and nickel were found in water samples taken from the harbour.
