The Housing Executive has appealed for young people in Derry to stop riding quad bikes on greens in the Moss Park area.
According to the housing authority, the vehicles are causing severe damage to the ground.
District Manager Kevin McDowell said large sections of grassed areas in Moss Park have been extensively churned up, making them unsightly. He urged residents to help identify the culprits.
"A number of grassed areas in Moss Park are now in a very bad condition" he said.
"It is extremely disappointing and disheartening to see that in a short space of time how quads and scramblers can ruin and destroy these public areas.
"The green spaces are designed for the whole community to enjoy and we spend significant amounts of money each year to maintain these areas. To try to repair the grass will cost additional money, which may be difficult in the current financial climate."
Local Neighbourhood Community police officer, Trevor McKeown said: "Each year we receive numerous complaints from the public about young people and adults using scramblers, motorised scooters and quads on open public areas, parks, playing fields and school grounds."
Constable McKeown said such use is in breach of the Road Traffic Order, and carries a maximum penalty on conviction of a £1,000 fine.
"A number of people have been prosecuted or reported, and we will continue to give this matter attention in partnership with other agencies for the safety of the community," added the officer.
