Council Scheme Lights Up 100 Year Old Library

Construction News Image
An landmark building on Belfast's Falls Road has been rejuvenated by a specially designed light installation, fitted to mark its Centenary year.

The Carnegie Library's ornate features have been highlighted through the custom lighting scheme.

Twenty-five pieces were implemented at various points, to accentuate the architectural merits of the Category B listed building.

The lighting scheme was coordinated by Belfast City Council and Belfast Education and Library Board as part of the 'Renewing the Routes' programme of external improvements to key arterial routes in the city.

Funded by the Integrated Development Fund (IDF), the lighting is the first phase of a £30,000 project, and will be followed by the installation of new tourism signage later in the year.

Lord Mayor and west Belfast councillor Tom Hartley said: "The Carnegie Library is not only a distinctive building, of very important architectural merit, but for the past 100 years has played a pivotal role in the cultural life of the Fall Road in particular and the wider west Belfast community as a whole."

Carnegie Library is one of a number of Belfast City Council projects being undertaken in and around the Falls Road, as part of the IDF-backed programme.

Around 100 commercial premises are being renovated as part of a £550,000 improvement scheme, the third phase of which is due to start in the near future.

A second phase of the lighting scheme also will illuminate one of the area's most distinctive and popular tourist attractions, the International Wall and part of St Mary's University College.

A number of similar schemes also are being undertaken along the Springfield, Shankill and Crumlin Roads.
