A proposed bypass of Ballykelly to the west of Limavady will be located south of the village, it has been announced.
Roads Minister Conor Murphy said: "I am pleased to report that the first key milestone, which is the production of a preliminary options report, including recommendations for a preferred corridor to the south of the village, has been met."
Mr Murphy said the project will significantly improve safety and journey time reliability on the A2 between Derry and Coleraine, and provide an environmental improvement to the village of Ballykelly.
This project is part of an overall strategy to improve the network of Key Transport Corridors across the north.
"Completion of this report leads on to the next stage of the project which is the development of a preferred route within the chosen corridor," added Minister Murphy.
All landowners in the A2 Ballykelly study area will receive direct notification of the preferred corridor location.
It is proposed to hold a further public exhibition in Spring 2009 when route options within the preferred southern corridor will be presented.
