New CCTV System Installed At Coleraine Station

A new high-quality CCTV system has been installed at Coleraine train station.

Translink said it hopes the cameras will serve as a powerful deterrent to prevent level crossing abuse.

When incidents do occur, footage can be used to investigate, apprehend and prosecute offenders where possible.

Frank Moore Northern Route Manager said: "We want to provide a safe environment for our passengers and employees and as such level crossing abuse will not be tolerated. Safety is of top priority for NI Railways."

"We will adopt a zero tolerance approach in relation to those who recklessly put their own lives and the lives of others at risk," he said.

"Last year, we had eight successful convictions for safety related offences at this particular crossing in Coleraine."

Coleraine Mayor David Barbour welcomed the new system.

He said: "It is crucial people recognise the dangers of level crossing abuse and anti-social behaviour.

"Coleraine Borough Council is already committed to this form of security for its town centres."

The cameras are part of a wider campaign in which Translink has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

"Translink also continues to highlight the reward scheme, which offers up to £1,000 reward to anyone who gives evidence leading to a successful prosecution," added a spokesman.
