Construction work has commenced on five new classrooms in Carlow.
The building work is taking place at Ballinabranna NS.
Contracts associated with the project were signed last week, and work is due to be complete for the new school term in September.
A school spokesman said: "It is due to the building boom in Ballinabranna.
"It is a sustained energy building and designed for the future."
The eco-extension will incorporate rain water collection and passive heating and lighting.
The original school building is more than 55 years old. It underwent it's last redevelopment in 1980.
Architect Keith Graham designed the latest extension around lighting.
There will be lots of window areas, bringing the environment in to the classroom.
