Phase one of the development of Backburn Park in Limavady has commenced.
A pre-start meeting was held on site to discuss the final elements of the sensory garden which will be created across from the Play Group in the park.
The funding for the garden came from the Local Community Fund administered by the Department for Social Development.
The garden will include sensory planting with different plants representing the five senses, decorative paving and seating.
It has already secured the voluntary support and engagement of the pupils at St. Mary's High School in the planting of flower beds.
This is the first phase of the Groundwork Master Plan created last summer. The development will create diverse uses for the park, making it safer and more welcoming.
The overall project will tackle problems such as poor utilisation of the facilities and the fear of crime by developing a sustainable, viably managed facility, and it will accommodate the needs of existing users and attract new users as well.
Jennifer Neff, Limavady Borough Council's Acting Community Development Officer, said: "The sensory garden will be a much needed improvement to this particular section of the park. Its creation is timely with the brighter evenings so those who use the park can fully appreciate it."
The partnership has been developed by Limavady Borough Council, Groundwork Northern Ireland, Supporting Communities NI, The Glens Community Association, Coolessan, Roe Valley Residents Association and Bovally Community Association in developing and implementing the Master Plan.
