Irish Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe at turned the first sod at the site of a new extension and renovation works at Marymount National School, The Rower.
Speaking at the school, Minister O'Keeffe said: "The new extension will provide Marymount with four new classrooms, a general purpose room and the existing school building will be completely refurbished.
"The new school will be of enormous benefit not only to today's students but also to the future generations that will be educated here and to the wider community.
"The school has a proud tradition of Gaelic games, particularly hurling.
"Past pupils have represented the County at all levels - under 21, Minor, Intermediate and Senior Hurling teams. Bringing 8 All-Ireland medals back to the Rower/Inistioge club is something you all must be very proud of," he said.
"This year, I will spend over €600m on the school building programme across the country - a level of capital investment that reflects this Government's commitment to continuing the programme of sustained investment in primary and post-primary schools," added the Minister.
