Minister Lauds Limerick Regeneration

Ireland's Urban Renewal Minister had met with regeneration directors in Limerick to discuss the ongoing investment in the city.

Minister Michael Finneran said the regeneration programme was of great significance, saying it is not only of benefit to the city, but the entire region.

"This programme is not just central for the future development of Limerick city but also for the whole region and will play an integral part in the development of Limerick city as a gateway city in the mid-west."

Last year €16m was invested in the Limerick Regeneration Agencies.

The funding facilitated an ambitious programme of demolition and enabling works, social inclusion activities and environmental and community safety works.

A Limerick Regeneration Programme document was also developed, setting the scene for the strategic planning and management of the entire regeneration project.

Mr Finneran lauded the work of the agencies.

"The draft Limerick Regeneration Programme really espouses a holistic approach to the social, economic, and physical regeneration of the city as a whole."

He also pledged future support for the programme.

"I am determined to ensure that every effort is made to continue to strongly support the regeneration programme here in Limerick, when my department’s regeneration allocations are finalised next month."

He said funding will be made available for the demolition and enabling works in St Mary's Park and Ballinacurra Weston.

"It will also set aside funds for the general estate improvement and house refurbishment in areas of Moyross and Southill."

The Minister added: "The regeneration agencies, the local authorities, the other public sector players, the private sector and, most importantly, the local community all share the same goal - to ensure that these communities become and remain viable and sustainable places where people want to live and work, now and in the future."
