A Carlow councillor has hit out at those he claims are keeping the "locks on the gates" in Bagenalstown by objecting to developments in the area.
Paddy Kiely said the town is being "crucified by objectors", while discussing plans for a new supermarket.
The town council has learned of objections to the Lidl scheme, which has already received planning permission.
Carlow County Council green-lighted proposals to build on the previously known Dr Gavin's site.
It is believed a number of local residents have voiced opposition to Lidl's plans.
Some town council representative have vented angered that this decision could be overturned, if taken to An Bord Pleanala.
Mr Kiely said: "The whole south of the county would benefit from this development. It gives people a choice in this economic downturn."
Councillors said they recognised the public's right to object, however one member suggested: "It's disgraceful that one or two people can stop the development of the Lidl site."
